Surigao del Norte sits at the northern tip of Mindanao, where the Philippine Sea meets Leyte Gulf. The location is dramatic and the real estate prices reflect that energy. So do the hazards.
Surigao City is in one of the Philippines' more seismically active corridors. In late December 2022, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck near the city. Hundreds of structures were damaged or destroyed. Roads cracked. Recovery took months. It was not the first: a magnitude 6.7 quake hit the same region in February 2017.
The province sits near active fault structures and is relatively close to the Philippine Trench, one of the deepest ocean trenches in the world. What this means for a buyer:

Liquefaction happens when loose, saturated soil temporarily loses its strength during a strong earthquake. Coastal barangays in Surigao City and nearby low-lying areas sit on alluvial and sandy soils that may be susceptible. Not all of Surigao del Norte is flat or coastal. The province has hilly and mountainous interior areas, particularly in municipalities away from Surigao City. Landslide susceptibility is mapped for slopes with unstable soil or weathered rock, especially in areas that receive heavy seasonal rainfall.
If the property you are considering is elevated, on a hillside, or sits below a cut slope, check the landslide and debris-flow layers. High susceptibility on a slope above the lot is often more important than susceptibility on the lot itself, because debris can travel downslope.

It does not tell you how a specific structure will perform in a 7.0 earthquake, how a particular slope will drain in heavy rain, or whether the soil under a specific lot will behave differently from the surrounding area.
